Digital Technician & Drone Surveyor
A Digital Technician and Drone Surveyor is a specialist role bridging traditional land surveying with modern digital construction technologies. These professionals operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to capture high-accuracy spatial data, which is then processed into 3D models, 2D maps, and digital twins using software such as AutoCAD and Revit.
Key Responsibilities
Drone Operations & Data Capture: Plan and conduct CAA-compliant drone flights to collect high-resolution imagery and LiDAR data.
Survey Control & Accuracy: Establish ground control points (GCPs) to ensure survey-grade precision.
Data Processing: Use photogrammetry software to convert raw imagery into orthomosaics, 3D point clouds, and topographic maps.
Digital Modelling (BIM): Integrate survey outputs into Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows for construction progress monitoring and clash detection.
Reporting: Produce detailed volumetric calculations, 2D plans, and 3D models for clients in construction, environmental planning, and agriculture.
Required Skills and Technologies
Software: Proficiency in Pix4D, Bentley ContextCapture, Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, or LSS.
Equipment: Experience with drones (e.g., DJI Matrice 350 RTK, Mavic 3 Enterprise), Total Stations, and GNSS systems.
Regulations: Knowledge of CAA regulations, airspace restrictions, and safety management systems (RAMS).
Training and Certification
Level 3 Geospatial Survey Technician Apprenticeship: Covers both digital technologies and field surveying techniques.
Skills Bootcamps: Short, intensive training combining on-site flight exercises with software labs (e.g., Integrated Drone Surveying & Digital Construction).
Operational Authorisation (OA): Required for flying in complex environments near infrastructure and people.
